Geospatial Data Engineer
We are seeking a highly motivated Geospatial Data Engineer to join our team. This role offers the unique opportunity to take ownership of your work, and to collaborate closely with our Earth system and AI scientists from the ground up, bringing innovative environmental forecasting technologies directly to our customers. As the first geospatial data engineer on our team, you will play a crucial role in shaping the future of climate adaptation and informed decision-making across industries.
About the Role
You'll be responsible for spearheading the development and optimization of geospatial data pipelines, workflows, and systems, taking full ownership of the end-to-end process. You will work hand-in-hand with Climate and AI scientists, you will translate cutting-edge research into scalable solutions.
You will design and build geospatial UI using relevant tools (such as Node.js, Mapbox, and Leaflet). Knowledge of GIS is preferable to help create intuitive and visually engaging geospatial applications.
You will work with AWS technologies (such as Lambda, EC2), to build and maintain scalable systems. You should be able to learn and use cloud computing tools as needed. Your role will involve ensuring smooth integration between the frontend and backend, making updates, troubleshooting, and improving performance when necessary.
You are excited to tackle complex problems with innovative approaches, always looking for the most effective and efficient solutions. You embrace a growth mindset in a fast-paced startup environment, where learning and adapting are part of the daily routine as you are continuously expanding your knowledge and skills in geospatial data handling, machine learning, Earth system data, Geo-UI development, and cloud integration.
This is an extraordinary opportunity to be at the forefront of the climate tech industry, contributing directly to the development of groundbreaking technology with global impact. You will not only advance your career in data engineering but also play a significant role in helping businesses and communities adapt to our warmer, more volatile world with quality environmental information. If you are passionate about making a difference and excited to be part of a dynamic startup, we would love to hear from you.

About Planette
Planette delivers best-on-the-planet environmental forecasts that fill the gap between 14-day weather predictions and 30-year climate projections. We forecast critical environmental variables like temperature, rainfall, and hail risk, two weeks to five years ahead, on a 25-km grid covering the globe. Planette is mission-driven to help people and the planet adapt to our new climate normal, driving informed decision-making through accessible, trustworthy forecasts of the future.
About the Team
At Planette, we are passionate, technical, and mission-driven. We are motivated by purpose – to improve the state of the planet while building a kick-ass company. We love science and technology, and believe that they can be harnessed for the global good. As we work, we love birds’ eye views, but also sweat all the details. We are competitive and ambitious, but strive to work collaboratively and kindly, helping out our teammates when they need it.
